In your water softener, tap water runs past a reservoir of resins. This descales the water as the lime binds to the resin beads. After some time, the resins become saturated. Rinsing it with softening salt will release the lime again and allow the resins to reabsorb lime. The lime is drained into the sewage system via salt water. Softening salt or regeneration salt is not harmful to the environment.
